Morganite belongs to the same gemstone family as emerald, aquamarine, gold beryl and bixbite. Morganite is one of the rarest gemstone in the Beryl family. The pink color found in Morganite is due to impurities of iron, and colors vary from soft pink to violet to salmon or peach. Pink Beryl of fine color and good sizes were first discovered on an island on the coast of Madagascar in 1910. In December of that year, the New York Academy of Sciences named the Pink Beryl, Morganite' after financier J. P. Morgan. Although Morganite was discovered in Madagascar, there are also deposits in Brazil, Mozambique, Namibia, Pakistan, USA and Russia.
Morganite can be routinely heat treated to remove yellow patches and is occasionally treated by irradiation to improve its color.
