Historical Red Diamonds – Famous Natural Red Diamonds throughout the World
The Moussaieff Red, once known as the Red Shield Diamond, is the largest red diamond with a classification as Fancy Red, measuring 5.11 carats (cut down from 13.9 carats in the rough). The diamond was found in 1990 by a Brazilian farmer by the Abaetezinho river. It was cut in the 1990s into a trillion shape and was featured in the 2003 Smithsonian exhibit entitled “The Splendor of Diamonds.” Another famous Red Diamond is the Kazanjian Red, which is displayed in the American Museum of Natural History. The Kazanjian Red is especially intriguing because the origin of its bright red color, similar to that of a garnet or ruby, is unknown. Weighing 5.05 carats, (there are only three known red diamonds in the world over 5 carats) the Kazanjian Red is Emerald shaped measuring 10.00mm x 6.00mm. It was found in the late 1920s in South Africa weighing a whopping 35 carats in the rough, it then made its way to Amsterdam where it was to be cut by an experienced cutter who took seven months to cut it. In 1944, after unsuccessful attempts to sell the stone, the Nazis confiscated it when they occupied the Netherlands. It was found much later in a salt mine close to Hitler’s retreat in Bavaria and mistaken for a ruby until the diamond merchant Louis Asscher identified it as a red diamond. The diamond changed hands many times and was thought to be missing until it was sold to Douglas Kazanijan in 2007, who recognized it to be the missing historic Red Diamond.
